Special Olympics, established in 1968 by Mrs. Eunice Kennedy SHRIVER, has served around 5 million athletes from more than 200 countries/regions all over the world in the past decades.
With proper instruction and encouragement, people with intellectual disabilities are able to take part in individual skills and team sports from which they can learn, enjoy and benefit socially and spiritually. Similarly, Special Olympics provides continuous opportunities for athletes to realize their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy and friendship through different kinds of sports. Alternatively, participating in Special Olympics not only strengthens family ties, but also reinforces the public’s understanding and respect to people with intellectual disabilities.
